Like the Spitfire, the Corsair achieved great respect among World War II fighter pilots. United Aircraft's Chance Vought division first flew the F4U Corsair in 1940. The aircraft remained in production from 1941 until the war and was briefly resumed in the 1950s.
Although it was not suitable for carrier operations until 1944, the Corsair became the most produced carrier fighter of all time. To meet production demand, the Corsair was also built by Goodyear (the FG) and Brewster (the F3A).
The Corsair's inverted gull wing allows the landing gear to be of standard length while providing adequate ground clearance for the massive 13-foot propeller.
The wing meets the fuselage at right angles, which reduces drag and results in higher speed.
