The North American P-51 Mustang was an American single-engine fighter during World War II. It was manufactured at the U.S. plants of North American Aviation. It was used successfully in the United States Air Force and by its allies during World War II and during the Korean War. The successful 1940s design meant that the aircraft remained in service in different countries until 1984. Over a 46-year period, more than 15,000 Mustangs were produced. Today, many of these aircraft are in private hands, including our fictional hero Maverick. Mustangs are still used at air shows and flying competitions to this day.
