G5 Garmin

010-01485-01

Garmin is pleased to announce the G5 electronic flight instrument for amateur (EAB) and sport aviation (LSA) construction.

The compact and cost-effective G5 offers exceptional performance and reliability, serving as a backup instrument for G3X or other EFIS systems, or as a stand-alone primary flight display, with optional annunciation mode autopilot.

It features a 3.5-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) that can be read in bright sunlight. Integrating GPS, the G5 displays attitude, ground track, altitude, airspeed, airspeed, ground speed, vertical speed, slip/slide, lateral/vertical course deviation and incorporates HSI.

Even more, functions are available when integrated with G3X displays. In addition, the G5 can serve as part of a very capable stand-alone autopilot solution when paired with compatible autopilot mode controllers and their servos.

Seamless cockpit integration

The G5 offers EAB/LSA aircraft owners a cost-effective way to add a primary or backup flight instrument to their cockpits, combining essential flight information in an easy-to-read display. It can be easily integrated into an EAB/LSA cockpit in place of a standard 3-1/8 (79.4 mm) flight instrument.

An optional 4-hour battery backup can be included in the G5 installation to provide pilots with added security in the event of aircraft power failure. The G5 flight instrument is easy to install. It measures 3 inches deep when combined with a battery backup, and 2.1 inches without the battery.

Its installation is further simplified by incorporating pitot tube and static inlets, which easily integrate with the aircraft's pitot-static system. The G5 integrates a GPS antenna; however, an external GPS antenna is optionally available if required.

Even more capabilities when combined with G3X systems

The fully integrated G5 electronic flight instrument serves as a distinct flight instrument when paired with the G3X and G3X Touch. In the unlikely event of an ADAHRS failure in the G3X, the G5 functions as a redundant ADAHRS source, which can supply the appropriate speed, attitude, and heading information data to the G3X displays.

Further extending its redundant capabilities, the autopilot in annunciation mode can also be displayed on the G5 in the event of a G3X display failure. Those who already have a G3X can take advantage of its magnetometer to obtain heading information, without the need to calibrate and install another magnetometer.

Pilots who have configured airspeed bugs on their G3X systems will notice that the same airspeed settings are displayed on the G5. Depending on the ambient cockpit lighting, and independent of the G3X, the G5 display automatically dims or brightens so that it can be easily seen in all lighting environments.

A rotary knob allows easy adjustment of altitude and heading bugs as well as barometric altitude settings, which are automatically synchronized with the G3X or G3X Touch displays.

Simple, Standalone Primary Flight Instrument with Autopilot

Further extending its utility as a standard backup display, the G5 electronic flight instrument can be paired with the GMC 307 or GMC 305 autopilot control handles, and corresponding GSA 28 servos, providing a standalone autopilot solution within a simple, cost-effective avionics suite.

When paired with these systems, the G5 displays the autopilot in annunciation mode along with the main flight instrumentation. In addition, if paired with a Garmin handheld, such as the aera® 660 or aera 796/795, the handheld can be easily connected to the G5 via the serial port to allow the autopilot to dock laterally to a flight plan and vertically to a VNAV descending profile.

With or without a G3X display, the G5 retains the ability to provide backup or stand-alone autopilot functionality, including the ability to fly GPS approaches when combined with an IFR compatible navigator.

Additional autopilot modes are selectable from the GMC 307 and GMC 305, including heading, pitch, roll and roll, and altitude, vertical speed and airspeed maintenance. Additionally it supports Level Mode, employing the autopilot to bring the aircraft to level flight.
