When in June 1942 the United States air forces joined the British RAF in the fight over the skies of Europe, attacking targets across the continent, the government of the German Third Reich accelerated the development of new interceptors capable of slowing down an offensive that threatened to collapse German industry in the medium term.
Aeronautical engineers and Luftwaffe personnel set to work, and before long, Allied bomber crews watched in amazement as tiny rocket fighters crossed their formations at incredible speed.
Overview
In their cockpit, daring German pilots tried to take advantage of the few seconds they had to select their target, aim and shoot, taking into account that they were attacking, flying at about 900 km/h, formations of flying fortresses that did not exceed 380. Thus began the final duel between the most technologically advanced air forces of the time.
The pages of this book explain the background and development of the air campaign over Europe, presenting the revolutionary fighter models manufactured by the German industry, narrating the experiences lived by the Luftwaffe pilots, pioneers of both jet fighter and rocket flight, and studying the prototypes that inspired post-war fighter models developed, in many cases, by German engineers.
And as the faithful readers of the Images of War collection know well, the present work is illustrated with abundant graphic material, whose explanation accompanies and develops in detail the text of the book.
