José María Carreras Dexeus - Un aviador Catalán Excepcional
"JOSÉ MARÍA CARRERAS DEXEUS, an exceptional Catalan aviator. The only Spanish pilot who flew most types of allied aircraft during World War II, and was later Airline Pilot".
At the beginning of May 2019, the Biography of Pilot José María Carreras Dexeus, a very outstanding aviator, came to light again. He began his enormous aeronautical work in Catalonia, then briefly moved to Canada and the United States and settled in England. As General Salas Larrazábal rightly says in the Prologue: "It is strange that until now there has not been a book dedicated to the famous aviator José María Carreras (JEP), with a very important trajectory in the initiation of aviation in Barcelona, decisive for the knowledge of the performance of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), during World War II in the United Kingdom. Its participation in the Berlin airlift and in the first commercial jet flights should also be highlighted.
The authors of the book, Rafael de Madariaga and Pere Ribalta, are well known in the very different environments in which they have developed their aeronautical careers, and each of them has contributed their knowledge to frame the history of JEP, as it was known by their family and friends, in the different environments in which their continuous and unstoppable activity took place. Now, several years after the primitive edition was exhausted, they have promoted and paid for the appearance of a Second Edition in a reduced quantity of the book, with minimal corrections to the original.
In the midst of the enormous hobby environment in Catalonia, directed very soon by Josep Canudas, architect and protagonist of very different initiatives throughout the Catalan aviation, emerges the character of José María Carreras. He is an amateur boy, passionate about aviation since he was a child, from a well-off family that provides him with an excellent education to which he contributes with full dedication, becoming an educated young man, with a full background of culture and knowledge and three languages in which he is fluent, as well as the correct Catalan and Spanish.
As we will see, based on tenacity and full dedication, José María gradually became a professional of extraordinary value, he gradually built up his own "career" as a Commercial and Transport Aviator, when these expectations could hardly be seen on the horizon and nobody could dream of studying or completing a curriculum that would allow him to finally become an Airline Pilot, which is what he finally achieves, after inventing his own aeronautical journey.
From that already privileged situation, before the beginning of the Spanish Civil War he opted for the activity in the LAPE Airlines and began his great career as an airline pilot.
At the end of the Civil War and establishing his precarious residence in England, he became the Spanish pilot who flew the greatest number of different types of aircraft, especially Anglo-Saxon, in his activity with the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary), an auxiliary body of the RAF (Royal Air Force). Finally, his time as Airline Transport Pilot, in British companies and airplanes, will come until his retirement.
