The arrival in Spain of the F-4 Phantom meant a deployment of power unknown for the Spanish military aviation until that moment due to its possibility of being refueled in flight and its great capacity of launchable weapons.
In a few months, the initial 36 units acquired from the United States reached a remarkable level of operability and became a leading Spanish defense aircraft thanks to its AIM-7 Sparrow missile and the seven tons of weapons under its wings.
