The Spanish Navy pioneered the use of the Harrier as an on-board weapons system. We find in this special signed by Salvador Mafé not only the description of the most famous STOL aircraft, its origins, and its versions and upgrades, its service in the Ninth Squadron but also interesting first-hand accounts of the operation of this aircraft, embarked or not, in hunting missions, interdiction, involved in incidents...
In addition, this monograph also deals with the Harrier of the Marines and those of the Italian Marina Militare and their combat operations.
It can be said that the birth of the Ninth Squadron took place in 1987 with the reception of the first three AV-8B aircraft from the McDonnell Douglas factory in Saint Louis.
Since then, and after the incorporation of new units, Day Attack, Night Attack, AV-8B Plus, and the only two-seater, the Harrier has become the most emblematic aircraft of our Armed Forces and, of course, of the Navy.
As it nears the end of its operational life and faces its replacement or, if not, the disappearance of the fixed-wing on board, this monograph serves as a tribute to a whole generation and to a way of understanding the defense capabilities of our country.
