Performance-based navigation (PBN), as described in the Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) Manual (ICAO Doc 9613), is founded on the principles of area navigation. Although various methods of area navigation have existed for years, its use as a primary navigation function is a more recent development. The PBN concept is intended to clarify the use of area navigation systems and is expected to replace many conventional navigation routes within the next two decades.

The fundamentals of PBN operations are relatively simple, and obtaining operational approval need not be a complicated process for you or the regulator.
