Castillo de Villaviciosa de Odón

The practical historical documentary study and military heritage guide Castillo De Villaviciosa De Odón (formally titled Castillo de Villaviciosa de Odón: Archivo General e Histórico del Ejército del Aire) is an authoritative technical reference written by Air Force Colonel Fernando Fernández-Monzón Altolaguirre. Published by the Spanish Ministry of Defense through the Subdirección General de Publicaciones y Patrimonio Cultural, this volume details the evolution of the fortress and its consolidation as the official guardian of national flight memory. It serves as an indispensable ground and flight study reference for every commercial pilot, military historian, flight student, certified flight instructor (CFI), first officer, and prospective airline captain candidate.

Across its specialized chapters, the textbook traces the rich history of the 15th-century castle—reconstructed by renowned architect Juan de Herrera in the 16th century—and outlines its public acquisition and restoration during the 1960s. The author focuses on its definitive conversion in 1972 into the official headquarters of the Air Force General and Historical Archive. The curriculum desconstructs its organization of documentary archives, cartographic charts, historical photo collections, and military aeronautical regulations, providing an essential research roadmap. Understanding historical defense archives enriches cultural background and tactical awareness required during cross-country air navigation across commercial air transport. Released in October 1998 in its corrected and expanded 2nd Edition, this volume features between 122 and 124 pages written in clear technical Spanish within a softcover pocket format measuring 19 x 13 cm. Enriched with explanatory plates alongside black-and-white and full-color historical photographs, the edition includes a specialized reference bibliography on the fortress in its closing pages. It serves as an essential academic investment for flight academies, military documentation centers, ground school instructors, aeronautical engineers, and active professionals across the global aviation industry and modern aeronautics.
