Figuras de la Aeronáutica Española II is the second volume in the AENA Foundation's collection dedicated to the personalities who contributed to the birth and development of aviation in Spain. This book offers prominent biographies from various perspectives, including military aviators, commercial aviation pilots, key engineers, and singular figures such as Tomás Castaño, Hidalgo de Cisneros, Ángel Salas, Mari Pepa Colomer, and Pablo Rada. An essential read for understanding the rich Spanish aeronautical history.
For the second consecutive year, the AENA Foundation has dedicated its Historical Aeronautical Studies Conferences to highlighting the figures who contributed significantly to the birth and development of aeronautics in Spain. This publication, Figuras de la Aeronáutica Española II, is the result of these conferences, offering a collection of essential biographies for understanding the evolution of aviation in the country.
Biographies from Multiple Perspectives
The selection of the biographed personalities in this work has been made from three different perspectives, which greatly enriches the content:
- The first is linked to military aviation, recovering the memory of illustrious aviators who carried out their work in the first decades of the 20th century and during the Civil War, such as Hidalgo de Cisneros and Ángel Salas.
- The second perspective corresponds to commercial aviation, rescuing the memory of personalities such as Horacio Echevarrieta, creator of the IBERIA company, and Leopoldo Pombo, one of the commercial pilots who achieved distance and flight hour records.
- The third facet, complementary, presents the biographies of engineers such as Juan de la Cierva, the ingenious inventor of the autogyro, and Francisco López-Pedraza, professor of Airports and promoter of Spanish airport development in the mid-20th century.
Tomás Castaño: The Featured Aviator Pilot
A prominent chapter in this work is dedicated to the biographed aviator, Tomás Castaño, whose biography "represents a large part of our aviators from the sixties and seventies of the last century". His military training, his transition to commercial aviation, first in charter companies and later in the flag carrier IBERIA, and his achievement as a world aerobatic champion make him a central figure for understanding the history of modern Spanish aviation.
Unique and Pioneering Figures
As a grand finale, the conferences included the figures of two singular individuals who provided unique perspectives on aeronautical development:
- Pablo Rada, mechanic and crew member of the Plus Ultra, a prominent aviator and singular politician.
- Mari Pepa Colomer, a pioneer of Spanish sport aviation and an indefatigable fighter in opening new paths for women of her time.
"Figures of Spanish Aeronautics II" is an essential work for historians, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the lives of those who forged aviation in Spain.
