La Conquista del Aire 1909-1911

The publication La Conquista del Aire 1909-1911 immerses us in the fascinating period of the origins of aviation in our country, with a special emphasis on the pioneering flights that took place in Madrid. It is an initiative of the ENAIRE Foundation (formerly AENA Foundation), a public business entity responsible for the infrastructures and management of air transport in Spain, whose mandate includes maintaining and disseminating the historical and cultural heritage of Spanish civil aviation.

Rescuing Historical Memory

This work is the result of a joint effort by the ENAIRE Foundation, the Madrid City Council, and the Conde Duque Center, with the aim of rescuing the beginnings of aviation in our country from oblivion. Through a multitude of images and materials from the era, an interesting and detailed journey through the origins of aeronautics in Spain is presented. It covers everything from the first flight carried out in our capital by the French aviator Julien Mamet in 1910, to the arrival of Édouard Stoeckel with the same feat at the old Hippodrome de la Castellana. It also mentions what would be the first female military aviator in history, Hélène Dutrieu.

A Glimpse into the Evolution of Aviation

The book explores how aviation went from a daring feat by figures like Ortiez Echagüe to a discipline that integrates science and technology. Mechanisms and singular aspects like clothing are systematized, and how air law and navigation techniques were created, inherited from millennia that allowed the dominance of the seas and would now make possible the conquest of the air.

In addition to paying a well-deserved tribute to those predecessors who sought a way for human beings to move through the air, this exhibition aims to bring the public closer to that early 20th-century society that gazed in astonishment at the miracle of flight. It is an invitation to show the public an aspect of Spain's history with notable contributions, which until today has been relegated to undeserved oblivion.
